The alternate spelling, 'serjeant', is used in The Rifles and other units that draw their heritage from the British Light Infantry. Its origin is the Latin serviens, "one who serves", through the French term sergent. The term "sergeant" refers to a non-commissioned officer placed above the rank of a corporal and a police officer immediately below a lieutenant or, in the UK below an inspector. Description: Based on the radio drama Challenge of the Yukon, Sergeant Preston of the Yukon was a half-hour American action adventure TV series. Broadcasted in color on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. from September 29, 1955, to September 25, 1958, the show ran for 78 episodes over three seasons.
