Cerebral cortex nerve cells. Light micrograph of a section through neurones (nerve cells, black) in the cerebral cortex of a human brain. Branching processes (dendrites) receive impulses from other nerve cells and pass them to the cell body. Each cell body also has an axon through which it relays nerve impulses to the dendrites of other neurones. Neurones allow information to be received, interpreted and relayed around the body. The grey matter of the cerebral cortex forms the outer layer of the brain that is responsible for conscious thought, memory and language.

Adipose tissue. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of fat cells making up adipose connective tissue. The rounded fat cells (brown, red) are called adipocytes. Connective tissue fibres (orange) have a supporting function for the fat cells. Almost the entire volume of each adipocyte is occupied by a single lipid droplet formed from triglycerides. Fat not used up in metabolic processes is housed in these cells. Adipose connective tissue forms a thick layer under the skin, around the buttocks, thighs and kidneys. Rod cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a group of rod cells (blue/purple) in the retina of the eye. Rod cells are light sensitive cells which respond to dim light, and are mainly used for dark adapted vision. They cannot detect colours, which is why vision in low light conditions is limited to shades of grey. Colours are detected by cone cells (not seen). When light falls on the tip of a rod cell, a chemical reaction sends an electrical impulse to the optic nerve (not shown), which relays it to the visual cortex of the brain. Magnification unknown.

Stem cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a clump of human embryonic stem cells (HESCs), showing surface detail. HESCs are pluripotent, which means that they are able to differentiate into any of the 200 cell types in the human body. The type of cell they mature into depends upon the biochemical signals they receive, though the cells seen here have not been exposed to growth factors. HESCs are being studied as a way to repair damaged tissue in diseases such as diabetes and Parkinson's. These cells were grown in 2005 at the Centre for Life, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. T-lymphocytes, illustration. T lymphocytes, or T cells, are a type of white blood cell and components of the body's immune system. They mature in the thymus. T lymphocytes recognise a specific site on the surface of pathogens or foreign objects (antigens), bind to it, and attract antibodies or cells to eliminate that antigen.

Cell division. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of a human epithelial cell (centre) during the late anaphase stage of mitosis. Mitosis is the cycle of replication and division by which new body cells are formed. Here the chromosomes (blue) of the parent cell have duplicated and the pairs are being pulled apart by microtubules (spindles, green) to opposite poles of the cell, in a process called cytokinesis. When the cell has split, two identical daughter cells are formed.

Varicosed vein. Light micrograph of a section through a varicosed saphenous vein in the lower leg, showing its thickened wall. Varicose veins are veins that become swollen, lengthened and coiled. They form due to defective valves in the superficial veins, commonly in the legs, and may require surgical removal.

Red blood cells (erythrocytes) transport oxygen from the lungs to body tissues, fuelling the metabolism of body cells. They also transport carbon dioxide (a gaseous product of respiration) back to the lungs for exhalation. The gases are bound by haemoglobin, a pigmented protein that is contained in the red blood cells. There are trillions of red blood cells in the blood. They last for about 120 days and are each around 7 micrometres across.

Each nerve cell comprises a body surrounded by numerous extensions called dendrites. Dendrites collect information from other nerve cells or from sensory cells. Each neuron also has one process called an axon, which passes information to other nerve cells, or to effector cells such as muscle fibres.

Organ of Corti. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of sensory hair cells from the organ of Corti, in the cochlea of the inner ear. These are the outer rows of hairs. These cells are surrounded by a fluid called the endolymph. As sound enters the ear it causes waves to form in the endolymph, which in turn cause these hairs to move. The movement is converted into an electrical signal, which is passed to the brain. Each V- shaped arrangement of hairs lies on the top of a single cell. Magnification: x8000 when printed 10cm wide.
