City Pop is a genre of music popular in Japan in the late 70s and 80s blending pop, jazz, and funk to create a pristine-sounding style of music meant to reflect the booming economic and technological prosperity taking place in Japan in the time period. The genre saw a resurgence in popularity in the 2010s thanks to its popularity in the Vaporwave community and several songs which gained millions of views on YouTube thanks to frequently appearing in the “recommended” sections below other videos.

Full Moon Records was an American record label existing from 1974 to 1992. Prominent signed acts included Chicago, Joe Walsh and Dan Fogelberg. Beginning in 1974 with Fogelberg, Full Moon Records was originally a subsidiary "spin-off" label from Epic Records that was created by Irving Azoff. The first album to be released under the label was Fogelberg's second album, Souvenirs. In 1980, distribution moved from CBS to Warner Bros. (movie soundtracks included).

Serving as a template for the countless new-wave clubs that sprung up in the city in the ’80s, the original Danceteria opened on West 37th Street in '79 to great fanfare, but it was Danceteria’s second incarnation at 30 West 21st Street, which ran from 1982 through 1986, that cemented the club’s place in nightlife history. It was there, of course, that Madonna’s first live performance took place in 1983 and would later serve as the setting for a pivotal scene in Desperately Seeking Susan. But forget about Madge, the club was much more renowned for its array of cutting edge DJs and as a setting for musicians ranging from shock-punkers, The Plasmatics, to modern-classical giant, Philip Glass.
