Sunrise on Boxing Day lit up the entirely of Lake Wanaka in pink. Definitely worth the early wakeup call on a public holiday!

The insanely blue waters of Lake Tekapo and the mountains beyond. The lake gets its colour from suspended 'rock flour' ground up by the Godley Glacier that feeds the lake. This also happened to be the view we had out the bedroom window in our holiday house in Tekapo (although it should be noted that this was taken with a telephoto to avoid the houses on the other side of the road from us).

One of the things I love most about New Zealand is how quickly the landscape can change. While Mackenzie country is full of golden tussock, the mountains themselves are all rock and snow. In Lindis Pass, which traverses the mountains on the road between Tekapo and Wanaka, the tussock carpeted everything all the way to the peaks of the mountains. It made the whole area feel a bit desolate, yet starkly beautiful at the same time.

The Memphis Sounds were an American professional sports franchise that played in Memphis, Tennessee from 1970 until 1975 as a member of the American Basketball Association. The team was founded as the New Orleans Buccaneers in 1967. Known during their time in Memphis as the Memphis Pros, Memphis Tams and, finally, Sounds, they played their home games at the Mid-South Coliseum.

The Shreveport Sports were a professional Minor League Baseball team based in Shreveport, Louisiana, in the United States. The Sports fielded a team from 1925 to 1935, 1938 to 1942, 1946 to 1957, and 1959 to 1961. They were affiliated with the Chicago White Sox in 1939, 1942, and 1946.

Since we didn't have any set plans for this day -- except for driving to our next apartment -- we took the long way around, meaning we took a random road we found up the east side of Lake Pukaki (the main road to Mount Cook goes up the west) and drove until we felt like turning around. We found plenty of isolated spots along the lake and only had to share them with a few other people. This view was my favourite, even if it meant climbing up a large boulder with a bunch of rather worried family members looking on!

Because my family and I didn't have our own mountainbikes, we decided to take the easy way down Coronet Peak once we'd been to its summit -- that is, we went back down the chairlift we came up! I just couldn't believe how stunning the views were -- even this one, which included a man-made pond that really shouldn't have been as beautiful as it was!

Once we crossed Arthur's Pass on the road between the South Island's west and east coasts, the landscape drastically changed. Gone were the lush green forests of the west coast; they had been replaced with an almost arid, mottled brown landscape. As you would expect with NZ, though, it was still stunningly gorgeous!

Highway 80 to the Hermitage in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park takes you through the fabled Mackenzie district. Each turn in this wonderful traffic free road will surprise you with a grand vista of pristine alpine lakes, crystal clear rivers and the majestic Southern Alps.
