In the early '70s, JuiceBox Performance Batteries were THE battery of choice for anyone running an extremely high compression and/or high cubic inch racing engine. So, what was the secret sauce? Unlike most traditional batteries with rubber casing, JuiceBox casings were made of polypropylene, which was about 75% thinner and 4x stronger. The extra space inside was used for more acid and more plates, resulting in batteries with 2x the cranking power of traditional builds. This meant that blown big block would turn over every time, even after a hot stall.

Hurst wheels, Line/Loc, and Swifter Shifter gloves were developed among other items, and later, Airheart Brakes and the Schiefer Manufacturing Company, which made clutches and other driveline components, were acquired. Hurst Performance floor-shifters were skillfully engineered, reliable and stirring in appearance, plus, their marketing was in tune with the times, catering to the flourishing muscle car movement of the 1960s.

Russetta Timing Association (RTA) held speed meets at various southern California dry lakes, beginning in 1939 and continuing well into the 1960s. It was an independent association, owned by Ray Ingram, who also owned the clocks. It flourished in part because the more prominent SCTA did not allow coupes or sedans until 1951, and RTA did. In their early years, this made RTA somewhat of an 'outlaw' as the new kid on the block that brought together the clubs with guys running traditional hot rods and not necessarily dedicated dry lake racers.

Raybestos was established in 1902 by Arthur H. Raymond and Arthur F. Law of Bridgeport, Connecticut to manufacture automotive brake linings and components. In 1906, Raymond and Law invented the woven brake lining, an important innovation in automotive brakes that not only made brake pads last longer, but improved performance by dissipating heat better than previous composites. From 1919 to 1989, Raybestos brakes were manufactured by Raymark Industries in Stratford, Connecticut. Since the early days, Raybestos was involved in motorsports, using what they learned on the track, and applying it to their consumer products, and often used "speedway tested for turnpike safety" in their advertising.

After the bridge over Fremont was dedicated in 1932, Seattle's Aurora Avenue became the centerline for a wide, long swath of car culture with auto dealers, parts stores, drive-ins for burgers, drive-ins for movies and more than one racetrack. The Seattle Speed Bowl, which opened in 1936 in what is now known as Edmonds, was one such track. For nearly a decade, racers were drawn to this oval track, where racers driving midget-class cars as well as jalopies duked it out for bragging rights and the occasional trophy. Like most racetracks, Seattle Speed Bowl closed as World War II rationing put racing on the back burner nationwide, but unlike many others, the track never opened again.

William Jahns Sr. founded W.H. Jahns Co. in 1912 in Los Angeles where he turned out pistons for literally every application. When Jahns Sr. retired in 1948, he left the business to his son, William Jahns Jr., though Junior had already started his own business on the side under the name of Jahns Racing Pistons a year prior. Being much more interested in racing applications, William Jahns Jr. continued to operate W.H. Jahns Co., though now under the Jahns Racing Pistons banner, while reducing their vast catalog to include only the most profitable products. He simultaneously pushed forward with his racing piston development, becoming a leading of early high performance pistons that drove many cars of the day to win races and set records.

He had over 30 starts, including the Indianapolis 500 in '58, '60, '61, and '63. Outside of racing, Wilson was a master machinist who custom-milled his own cams and ran a business called Dempsey Wilson Racing Cams in Hawthorne, California, which both made new camshafts and refurbished old ones. His primary clients were hot rodders and street racers, but he also did work for his fellow open-wheel racers, even providing some of his secret grinds to those he really liked.

Riverside International Raceway (sometimes known as Riverside, RIR, or Riverside Raceway) was a motorsports race track and road course established in the Edgemont area of Riverside County, California, just east of the city limits of Riverside and 50 miles east of Los Angeles, in 1957. In 1984, the raceway became part of the newly incorporated city of Moreno Valley. Riverside was noted for its hot, dusty environment and for being a somewhat complicated and dangerous track for drivers, but was also considered one of the finest tracks in America. The track was in operation from September 22, 1957, to July 2, 1989.

Frank McGurk was a race car driver in the '30s and '40s, but had so many innovative ideas for pulling more performance out of engines, he became an engineer to implement them himself. While his work started earlier after his service during WWII, he formally founded McGurk Engineering in 1950 in Gardena, California. Designing everything from cams and manifolds to heads and rocker assemblies, McGurk was a talented engineer who specialized in small block V8 and inline 6 bow tie mills, the latter of which were extremely popular with sprint car racers, while the V8s were the hot ticket for drag racers and hot rodders. McGurk worked until 1969 when he sold the company, but remained active in the racing community until is death in 1982.

Don Edmunds was an American racecar driver who had his first start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1957. He won the 1957 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year after finishing nineteenth, though Edmunds' Indy career ended with a serious practice accident at the Speedway the following year. In 1963, he founded Autoresearch in Anaheim, California, which specialized in building midget cars and sprint cars. Edmunds created the blueprints and did most of the fabrication work on the original Bill Thomas Cheetah prototype sports car racer. His chassis won several National Midget Championships in the late '60s and early '70s. Additionally, Edmunds was a prolific constructor of Formula Super Vee cars well into the '80s.

Riverside Speedway was a 1/4 mile dirt track built on top of an old landfill in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. The track opened in 1983, hosting regular racing events several nights a week and, after a full 20-year run, shut down in 2003. From midgets and outlaws to stocks and modifieds, racers from throughout Saskatchewan and beyond made countless memories tearing up the dirt at Riverside Speedway.

Reggie 'Rat' Dennison, was a custom chopper builder and owner of Rat's Chops, a custom motorcycle speed shop that ran out of Oakland's Acorn neighborhood throughout the '70s and well into the '80s. Unlike a lot of shops that were always trying to build the next crazy thing and gain prestige through awards and magazine features, Rat didn't play that game. Rat and his crew built choppers to ride, not to fawn over in magazines. In addition to all the typical old school chopper customizations, Rat's Chops also specialized in making them fast, and were one of the first shops to manufacture their own superchargers, turning choppers into veritable land rockets.

What is now known as "STP" was invented by German scientists during WWII as a response to Germany's need for lubrication of the German war-machine vehicles. WWII US Army divisions in Africa that overtook German Afrika Korps vehicles alleged that the Germans employed an engine oil that is now known as STP formulation full-strength in their air-cooled 4-cylinder engines, which successfully traveled through the hot African Desert war-front without seizing due to friction and extreme heat. How the Germans' original chemical synthesis formulation found its way to the U.S. after WWII is not known, but most likely it made that journey along with many of the other German innovations through the distribution of technology through the spoils of war.
