The "summer loss phenomenon," whereby a youngster loses part of his or her reading skills since they often don't read over the summer, inspired the creation of the series. Although Reading Rainbow was originally intended to be a summertime program, it rapidly became a broadcast hit, a standard in schools, and a cultural touchstone.
