It became a Grade II listed building in 2012 and the tidal island of St. Mary's is now a popular visitor attraction in Whitley Bay.

Saint Mary's Island, off the North East coast at Whitley Bay, owes its name to the religious community that inhabited the island in medieval times when there was a chapel on the island. The remains of the chapel were destroyed when the lighthouse and cottages on St. Mary's Island were built in 1898. St.Mary's Lighthouse is now a grade II listed building and open to visitors at low tide when the causeway to the island can be crossed.

Completed in 1854, St Mary's church on Brownsea Island (near Poole, Dorset, England) was funded by William Waugh, a former Colonel in the British Army, who purchased the island a couple of years earlier for £13,000. Waugh was also responsible for building a pottery works on the island which once employed more than 200 people, and for the construction of the now abandoned village of Maryland on the western shores of the island. The church was named for Waugh's wife Mary. Brownsea Island has been owned and managed by the National Trust since 1962 and is open to visitors during the months of April to September. St Mary's however is owned by the Church of England...
