The river Avon in the grounds of Warwick Castle, England. Down from the Castle, and across the bridge lies the island where the river Avon separates and flows on either side. On this large area of land is a Victorian boathouse, and here during the 1890s the Countess of Warwick kept a small menagerie comprising a baby elephant, some Japanese deer, a flock of Chinese geese, an emu, raccoons, and an antbear. When the elephant grew too large, it was given away to an animal trainer in Lymington, while the emu achieved fame when it chased a bishop through the castle grounds. On Friday, I headed out to the sunflower fields near Warwick in the Southern Downs, having been assured that they were beautifully in bloom. They clearly had been, but by the time we got there, the flowers had mostly gone to seed. The odd bright yellow shock of petals could still be found (as in the background), but I thought this sunflower -- already 'drawn on' before we got there -- summed up our mood when we saw the fields, having driven 2 hours to get there!

Luckily, our trip out to Warwick last Friday offered a number of other photo opportunities aside from the sunflowers that we were searching for (and that we found were mostly already in seed). This shot comes from a quick stop to look at the storm clouds that were welling up and heading over Cunningham Gap towards the coast. I love how vibrant the colours in Australia are!

All summer, I've been trying to plan a weekend to head out to the Darling Downs and go looking for sunflowers. Imagine my surprise, then, when I realised they were still out during my trip there in late March! I could have taken photos of these flowers for hours...except for the fact that I didn't have tall boots on and I was terrified of coming across an angry snake (not all that unlikely, given the number of holes in the ground all around the sunflowers).
