Active Listening Shorts
Description: This applies to any work, and certainly describes English teachers and English students. Digital communication has birthed a new category of performance art for all of us. An office worker sits through a ninety-minute strategy call without contributing a single word. An instructor endures a mandatory department briefing while mentally planning tomorrow's lunch. A learner attends a virtual lecture, staring directly into the camera lens to project pure focus. Since the mic is off, true participation is impossible to measure well. Instead, we rely on rhythmic head movements and raised eyebrows to simulate deep intellectual engagement. It is a truly masterful display of nonverbal communication that hides our wandering minds.
