Description: The Akron Pros were a professional football team that played in Akron, Ohio from 1908 to 1926. The team originated in 1908 as a semi-pro team named the Akron Indians, but later became Akron Pros in 1920 as the team set out to become a charter member of the American Professional Football Association (later renamed the National Football League (NFL) in 1922). Fritz Pollard, the first black head coach in the NFL, co-coached the Akron Pros in 1921. Paul Robeson played for the team in 1921 as well. He was among the earliest stars of professional football before football became segregated from 1934 to 1946. In 1926, the name was changed back to the Akron Indians, after the earlier semi-pro team.
Description: The Akron Black Tyrites were a Negro league baseball team that played out another team's schedule for a portion of a single season. They were based in Akron, Ohio, and were a member team of the Negro National League (II). The Columbus Blue Birds finished last in the first half of the 1933 season, were disbanded and ended up merging with the Tyrites, one of the top independent Negro league teams of their day.[2] The Tyrites then more or less became the Cleveland Giants, which finished out Columbus's schedule for the season. The team did not continue after 1933.
Description: The Akron Champs was the dominant name of a minor league baseball team that represented Akron, Ohio between 1905 and 1920.The team began play in 1905 as Akron Buckeyes and were members of the Ohio–Pennsylvania League when the league was formed. In 1906 to the Akron Rubbernecks, a reflection of the city's top industry. Since 1880, Akron was the home of Goodyear, BFGoodrich, and Firestone, making Akron the "Rubber Capital" of the world.
Description: Founded in 1907, The Akron, Canton and Youngstown Railroad was organized with the intent to connect Akron, the rubber capital of the world with Canton, a hub of general manufacturing, and Youngstown, a steel producer. Initially a 7.5 mile terminal operation, AC&Y was well managed and efficient. AC&Y acquired Northern Ohio Railway in 1920 and became one of the most profitable Class I railroads in the country successfully competing with larger Eastern carries like PRR and B&O. AC&Y remained an entirely independent railroad until 1964 when it was sold to the Norfolk & Western and remained a subsidiary until 1982. Ironically AC&Y never did connect with Canton and Youngstown.
