Description: In October 1953 the first FJ Holden drove off Holden’s Fishermans Bend assembly line and on down the road to become Australia’s most loved car. It was easy to love the FJ with its broad toothy grin of a grille, flashy two-tone paint, bright chrome work and perky little tail fins. The FJ was little changed from the first Holden of 1948, but the upbeat styling gave it a personality that was bright and bubbly compared to its more serious predecessor.
Description: The styling of the EJ was a radical departure from that of the EK, with a lower roofline, a flatter boot and an absence of fins. Improvements were made to the brakes, front suspension and the Hydramatic automatic transmission. All EJ models were powered by a 138-cubic-inch (2,262 cc) inline six-cylinder engine, producing 75 bhp (56 kW).[2] Since the introduction of the original Holden 48-215 model in 1948, Holdens had been fitted with what was commonly known as the grey motor. The EJ was the last Holden to be equipped with that engine. The last Grey motor was made on Friday, 2 August 1963.
Description: The FB Holden was out-of-fashion the moment it was launched but that didn't stop buyers flocking to Holden showrooms and laying down their hard-earned cash. In 1960, Holden combined virtually all the ugly, stupid and out-of-fashion features, still held half the market – and made a cult car. Naturally people laughed at the FB and sales were dismal. Actually, come to think of it, they praised it and bought it unremittingly. Indeed GM-H officials could argue that, if the FB was a mistake, it was a fortuitous one. It enabled GM-H to maintain its extraordinary 50 per cent-plus share of the market.
Description: The FC appeared in May 1958 and was essentially a facelift of the FE. The FC featured a lot more chrome and the option of a bolder two-tone paint design. The engine received a revised camshaft profile and a slight increase in compression ratio. By the end of 1958, Holden’s market share had risen to 50.1 per cent, with a total of 191,724 FCs being sold by the time the model was superseded by the FB, which appeared in May 1961. While the FE-FCs didn’t prove as popular in race or drag circles as the FX-FJs, a number did manage to cover themselves in glory, most notably the FEs of Bob Holden and Bruce McPhee.
