Description: In Celtic culture, the mysterious image of a horned being permeates from the Iron Age in the Gaulish La Tène culture all the way up to 19th century England in the legends of Herne the Hunter. In spite of several depictions of a “horned god” in Celtic artwork throughout the centuries, the answers to exactly who this horned being was is not clear. The name “Cernunnos” is found on an artifact known as “the Pillar of the Boatman”. It’s a carving from the first century CE, and it is the only time the name Cernunnos appears in reference to this horned being. Description: Cernunnos is the “Horned One”, a Celtic god associated with sexuality, fertility, the hunt, and the underworld. He was worshiped as the “lord of wild things” by the iron age Celts all across Europe as late as the first century, but his worship began centuries before that. Cernunnos is nearly always portrayed with animals, in particular the stag. He alternates with the goddess of the moon in ruling over life and death, continuing the cycle of death, rebirth and reincarnation.
Description: A mythical entity with deer antlers and wolf companions is depicted against a black background. Above the entity is a circular symbol composed of three interlocked spirals, a triskelion, rendered in a glowing light green. Description: This design portrays Cernunnos, the ancient Celtic Horned God—lord of the forest, animals, and the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Seated in deep meditation and crowned with majestic antlers, he embodies the raw, untamed power of nature and the sacred balance between creation and decay. Often associated with fertility, wilderness, and abundance, Cernunnos is a guardian of the natural world and a symbol of primal spiritual energy. The surrounding branches and organic forms reflect his unity with the earth and all living things. A powerful and grounding design for those drawn to Celtic mythology, pagan spirituality, and the wild forces of nature.
Description: Based on a compilations of images of Cernunnos, I've re/created this version in my own style. Cernunnos is holding two torcs-- a type of Celtic jewelry-- and is wearing a large brooch. It's one of my few designs that's not completely historically accurate, but I really liked how the image turned out!
Description: This design is based off of the manuscript of the famous Middle English poem Sir Gawain of the Green Knight (from the Cotton MS Nero A X manuscript). I've recreated one of the illustration by hand carving my own block print then printing and scanning it. The image depicts Sir Gawain near his final confrontation with the Green Knight.
Description: This design is based off one of the most famous panels of the Gundestrup Cauldron. It depicts the god-- often identified as Cernunnos-- holding a torc in one hand and a snake in the other. I've recreated the design in my own style making a unique take on this famous piece of Celtic/La Tene art!
