Description: The first County Seat store opened in Minneapolis in 1973 and was an offspring of the grocery store chain Super Valu Stores. County Seat grew to be one of the nation's largest mall-based specialty retailers of casual wear for teens and young adults with more than 630 jean stores in 46 states. Jeans and jean jackets account for more than 50 percent of the company's sales in 1993. Teens do their shopping in the malls, according to County Seat research, and the company expected its growth to continue with the growth of regional malls. The chain closed in 1999 following Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
