Esq Shorts
Description: Haddon Salt, born October 18, 1928, in Stanfree, Derbyshire, England, emigrated with his wife and three children to California in 1964 with US$10,000. Salt opened "Salt's English Fish & Chips Shop" in Sausalito in 1965. By 1967, Salt had opened three more stores, and his restaurants were now called "H. Salt, Esq. Authentic English Fish and Chips Shoppe." Salt sold his restaurants to a national fast food chain wanting to take the formula nationwide in 1969. The new owner was not successful in the large-scale expansion of the H. Salt Esq. chain, and cut its ties with the business by 1987. Franchisees were allowed to purchase their restaurant, a move that resulted in a few independently owned locations that are still up and running today.
