Description: Gamle Stavanger (Old Town, Stavanger) is a historic part of the Norwegian city of Stavanger, Rogaland County. The area consists largely of restored, white painted, wooden buildings built in the 18th & early 19th centuries. In the years following World War II, a new city plan was proposed for Stavanger, which involved replacing most of the old wooden buildings with concrete structures. However, thanks largely to the objections raised by Einar Hedén, then Stavanger's city architect, the municipal council voted in 1956 to conserve part of the old city centre as can be seen today.
