Good Fortune Shorts
Description: This piece was both referenced and inspired by my lucky cat or in Japanese, maneki neko, collection. I have around 40 scattered throughout my home. Having a lucky cat at home is suppose to bring good fortune and money. Lucky cats mean different things depending on the colour and if it's the right paw or the left paw raise as well as the colour and items they are holding. I find these cute cats lovely to have in the home. For good feng shui, I am told that you need to place them near where you make money and visible to an open door to invite good fortune. Bunnies are hidden throughout the piece. Inked and drawn traditionally and digitally colored and edited in Photoshop.
Description: The Chinese-takeout container, with its Japanese-influenced origami folds, is a uniquely American invention. In 1894, Chicago inventor Frederick Weeks Wilcox patented the “paper pail,” which was a single piece of paper, creased into segments and folded into a container. It was 1973 when a young graphic designer working for a national packaging company added a Chinese pagoda with 'Thank You' in red ink to the previously plain white containers that changed the look of take out forever. Later, 'Enjoy' would be tagged on as an option and the design would be replicated on bags and other containers used by Chinese restaurants for their takeout orders, though don't expect to find these boxes in China, as these are strictly a North American thing.

Description: The Blind Seer was one of NYC's oldest continuously operating family businesses in Chinatown. Operating across multiple generations of the Zhou family, from 1883 until 1992, the curio shop and fortune-teller business was a favorite of locals and tourists alike, but a combination of rising rents and a lack of interest from the next generation meant the end for this Lower Manhattan landmark. Thankfully, they made it through the '70s, which gave us a killer souvenir t-shirt that is now back to live another life.
