Description: Kero-Sun was one of the best-known names in America’s portable kerosene-heater boom of the late 1970s and early ’80s. The company was founded in Kent, Connecticut, by former airline pilot William “Bill” Litwin, who became convinced that compact Japanese kerosene heaters could offer Americans a cheaper way to heat individual rooms during the energy crisis. After striking a deal with a Japanese manufacturer, Kero-Sun began importing and marketing the heaters in the US, with sales climbing from just a few thousand units in the mid-1970s to hundreds of thousands by the early ’80s. By 1981, Kero-Sun was doing roughly $100 million in annual business. Rising competition, falling fuel prices, and growing safety concerns brought an end to Kero-Sun.
