Description: James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the British Royal Navy. In 1770, he charted New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. The Transit of Venus Expedition was Captain Cook's first scientific voyage. It was a three-year expedition to the south Pacific Ocean aboard HMS Endeavour, conducted from 1768 to 1771. The voyage was jointly sponsored by the Royal Navy and Royal Society. The publicly stated goal was to observe the 1769 transit of Venus from the vantage point of Tahiti. Additional objectives – outlined in sealed orders not to be opened until Cook reached Tahiti – were searching for the postulated Terra Australis Incognita (undiscovered southern land) and claiming lands for Britain.

HMS Resolution was a sloop of the Royal Navy, a converted merchant collier purchased by the Navy and adapted, in which Captain James Cook made his second and third voyages of exploration in the Pacific. She impressed him enough that he called her "the ship of my choice", and "the fittest for service of any I have seen".

He later disproved the existence of Terra Australis, a fabled southern continent. The Terra Australis Expedition began in 1772, when Captain Cook was commissioned to lead another scientific expedition on behalf of the Royal Society, with the objective of determining the existence of the hypothetical continent Terra Australis. Cook created a plan to probe southward in the southern summer, then retreat to more northerly, warmer, regions in the frigid southern winter.
