Description: Watercolor Painting of The Hill House Chair. This chair was designed in 1902-1903 for the publisher W.W. Blackie. The original still resides in the bedroom of the Hill House in Helensburgh. Originally painted white, Mackintosh's high, narrow Hill House chair was meant to be decorative - not to be actually sat on. The elegant Ladder Back chair is extremely delicate with it's sole purpose decoration. The slender back legs are elliptical in shape with a series of ladder rails linking them together. Description: Charles Mackintosh, 1868 - 1928, Scottish architect, designer and artist, husband to Margaret Macdonald. Both famous Art Nouveau, Symbolist artists from the last century. Featured here, 'The Wassail' is an image of the original gesso wall frieze made for a ladies tearoom. Gesso was applied over stretched hessian giving it a textured look with earthy colours. His wife, Margaret was commissioned at the same time to do a very similar panel which was also hung in the tearoom labelled, 'The May Queen'.
