Medieval King Shorts
Description: For this hand-carved block carving I have based my design on an original image from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae found in the Bibliothèque nationale France (National Library of France.) The image is a piece of marginalia depicting a Medieval king. I recreated this image in my own style and have printed this block by hand before scanning it to make this design.
Description: Baldwin IV, known as the Leper King, ruled the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the 12th century during the turbulent era of the Crusades. Diagnosed with leprosy at a young age, he defied his fate with extraordinary resolve. Marked by disease but unbroken in spirit, he led the Crusader kingdom with courage, wisdom, and deep faith. Alongside the Templars, Crusaders, and other knightly orders, he defended Jerusalem against Saladin’s forces—most notably at the legendary Battle of Montgisard. Despite his physical suffering, Baldwin became a symbol of endurance and honor—a king who dedicated his life to the protection of the Holy Land.
