Description: The Platypus is a semi-aquatic mammal that lays eggs. The only other existing egg laying mammals are Echidnas. The Platypus is found only in eastern Australia and Tasmania. They spend much of their time in the water, hunting for worms, insect larvae, shrimp, and crayfish. The Platypus hunts for its food by sensing the electric field created by the movement of its prey. As is true for many animals of Australia, there is evidence that the Platypus is at risk of extinction from climate change, increasing periods of drought, and loss of its environment due to development.
