Description: In "Dance of the Moth" (1923) Paul Klee uses fragmented, abstract shapes on deep blue, turquoise, and beige vertical bands to depict a moth's hypnotic flight toward the light. Watercolor and oil transfer create layered atmospheric depth, while black pencil hatching adds calligraphic structure, reflecting Klee's Bauhaus-era exploration of form and movement.
Description: Paul Klee’s Strong Dream (1929) exemplifies his mature Bauhaus period, combining precise geometric structuring with chromatic experimentation rooted in color theory. The composition’s layered, semi-translucent forms evoke architectural schematics and dream symbolism, reflecting Klee’s exploration of synesthetic relationships between shape, hue, and emotional resonance. Characteristic of his fusion of Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism, this work integrates rhythmic linework and spatial ambiguity, inviting analytical as well as intuitive engagement. A compelling study in abstraction, Strong Dream remains a significant reference point for 20th-century modernist visual language.
