Description: I have a love of medieval cathedrals; they speak so natively to the deep faith of the people who laboured so long ago to create such spectacular places of worship. Peterborough Cathedral, in England, is such a place. This image is of the incredible fan-vaulted ceiling of the "New Building" that was added beyond the apse during the early 1500s. I understand that as an architectural style, fan-vaulting was an English style, which emerged during the 14th century. It is quite something. What I love about this image is the strong converging verticals leading up to the conoidal fans, and the delicate illumination from lead-lighted windows on the limestone vaults. You gotta love it!
Description: I have to say that medieval cathedrals are remarkable; they speak so intimately of the deep faith of the people who laboured so long ago to create such spectacular places of worship. Peterborough Cathedral, in England, is such a place. This image is of the incredible ceiling above the apse. What I love about this image is the strong converging verticals leading up to the image of Christ in its centre, the stained glass, and the intricately decorated arches over the niches that furnish the semi-circular wall around the apse. It was quite something to behold.
Description: This is the towering interior of Peterborough Cathedral, in England, with its intricately designed ceilings, stained-glass clerestory windows to provide vibrant light, and the beautifully proportioned Norman stone arches. In this image, the limestone stonework has taken on an orange glow from the light from the windows, giving the whole, despite its loftiness, a warm and inviting feeling.
