Sand Dunes Buggy Shorts
Description: Sand dunes aren’t the first thing to come to mind when you think of Idaho, but they not only have them, but they are big, and when you sit at the base of St. Anthony Sand Dunes and stare at a near-vertical 300-foot mountain of sand, there is little else that comes to mind. The dunes cover over 41,000 acres and the 5,000-foot elevation means snow in the winter, making this an excellent dune getaway from spring through late fall. Knowing this, it only makes sense that there would be a dune buggy shop nearby in the town of St. Anthony, and that shop was Bob's Buggy Werks. From tune-ups and repairs to custom sand rails and high-performance racing engines, Bob's had ever sand racer covered.
Description: The earliest sandrails started out as pan or tunnel buggies and were named as such depending on what factory vehicle was stripped down and used as the basis of the sand car. By the mid-sixties, professionally fabricated, purpose built full tube chassis sandrails were quickly becoming the hot setup and from their shop in Imperial, California, Ray’s Rails was one of the originators. From more traditional import rear engine setups, to all out mid-engine, V8 powered dune rockets, Ray and company rocked the scene and could routinely be found testing and tuning their latest designs and customer rides at the local dunes for over three decades.
Description: As dune buggies gained in popularity in the late '60s, they began evolving from homebrewed backyard builds to professionally designed, purpose-built off-road vehicles. These consisted of everything from ready to assemble tube frames and fully welded frame assemblies to turnkey cars for everyone from the weekend warrior to the amateur racer looking to take the checkered flag. Anaheim, California's Sand Toys was one of the earliest full-feature shops catering to the dune buggy and sandrail crowd by offering everything they needed to make their off-road dreams happen as well as a full service department to get their cars ready for the weekend.

Description: In 1969, accomplished off-road racer and a self-taught mechanical innovator, Drino Miller, partnered with Stanford Havens to open up a shop to build and tune off-road race cars. Calling their operation Miller-Havens Enterprises, they specialized in creating race winning buggies that proved their stuff at both the Mint 400 and Baja 500 where they bested high dollar race teams with their low budget custom single seat buggies. Miller-Havens didn't just stop at dedicated race cars, but created one of the most accessible ways into off-road racing – the Baja Bug. Based on the readily available Type I platform, these vehicles were perfect for off-roading and something that the average Joe could not only afford, but build himself at home.
Description: The Glamis Sand Dunes, located in southeastern California near the Arizona border, form one of the largest dune fields in North America and are a premier destination for off-road enthusiasts. Part of the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, Glamis stretches for over 40 miles, with massive, ever-shifting dunes that can rise more than 300 feet high. The area draws riders from across the country who come to drive ATVs, dirt bikes, 4x4s, and dune buggies across its open terrain. Beyond recreation, the dunes also have a unique ecological and cinematic significance, having served as a filming location several movies over the years. Despite the harsh environment, specialized plants and wildlife have adapted to survive in this striking landscape.
Description: Con-Ferr was founded in 1961 by Pete Condos & Frank Ferro (hence the Con-Ferr name), though eventually Pete bought out Frank to become sole owner and maintained the name for the life of the company. Con-Ferr billed itself as America’s largest off-road parts and accessories provider and with their 44,000 square feet Burbank, California facility, I'm inclined to believe the claim. Recreational off-roading was a fairly new endeavor in the '60s and thanks to Pete Condos, countless Americans were able to outfit their 4WD rigs and dune buggies to get them out on the trails. From roof racks and roll cages, to wide wheels and engine adapters, Con-Ferr carried it all and did so for decades, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
Description: Based in North Hollywood, California, the Sandmaster Company was formed in 1966, initially focusing on fiberglass dune buggy conversion kits. By the early '70s, Sandmaster was fabricating their own single seat competition off-road buggies, many of which went on to take class titles in the most grueling of desert racing circuits.
