Signage Shorts
Description: A secular pilgrimage long dreamed of and finally arrived, a place of wonder, of longing fulfilled and reawakened too. It felt so vast, that I could travel for days, weeks even and never reach the end. My own American dream was formed by 1970s dramas, films, books and fantasies, a land of palm trees and long streets, of huge cities where I could lose myself in a maze of teeming neighbourhoods of promise. Having arrived, finally, jet lagged and redolent of long haul travel, I set out to explore this promised land. I fell in love with the signage, tatty, dated, a reminder of my own 1970s American dream. This work is rich in bright colour, youthful and joyful, with close attention to detail. A great gift, a wonderful collection starter.

Description: "Hotel Donaldson Fargo ND" I knew nothing about this hotel when I photographed this sign; it just caught my eye. What I learned later: Originally built in 1893 by the Odd Fellows Lodge after a fire destroyed much of downtown Fargo. In the mid-1900s, it became a hotel and went through many owners over time. Around 2000, the hotel, which was in great disrepair, was bought once again by another owner; renovations began to bring it back to life, and it was reborn as a modern luxury boutique. I transformed my original photograph with a subtle painterly effect, creating photo art while preserving the scene I experienced. Description: Magikist was founded in 1943 by Wilbur "Bill" Gage, who changed the name of his Austin Rug Cleaners to Magikist, melding the words "magic" and "kissed." His wife at the time, Doris Greenwood, suggested the "sweetest name in rug cleaning" slogan and came up with the company logo, a pair of red lips. Gage operated Magikist in the Chicago area south of Howard Street and Lionel and Shirley Gelfand operated Magikist in the area north of Howard Street. In the Chicago area, the Magikist Lips (in the form of huge signs on the Edens Expressway, Dan Ryan Expressway, Kennedy Expressway, and Eisenhower Expressway which lit up and flashed) were well-known landmarks.
