The White Shorts
Description: The Dude is mostly inspired by Jeff Dowd, an American film producer and political activist the Coen brothers met while they were trying to find distribution for their first feature, Blood Simple. Dowd had been a member of the Seattle Seven, liked to drink white Russians, and was known as "The Dude". The Dude was also partly based on a friend of the Coen brothers, Peter Exline, a Vietnam War veteran who reportedly lived in a dump of an apartment and was proud of a little rug that "tied the room together".
Description: As before, White presents this season’s tangle of privileged problems around a theme. We’ve had money in Hawaii and sex in Sicily, and this time, it’s what he calls, “a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality”. We’ve known for a while that the setting would be Thailand, and this outpost of the fictional White Lotus would be on the island of Koh Samui. And again, proving that there’s no such thing as bad publicity, filming took place in a real-life Four Seasons resort. As before, it’s a backdrop that justifies binge-watching by itself, even before you factor in the exquisite torture White inflicts on his characters.
