Description: The 1974 World’s Fair took place in Spokane, Washington during the Cold War, though the Soviets were one of the first nations to commit to be a part of Expo '74. Their participation marked the first time since the New York World’s Fair of 1939-1940 that the Soviets had exhibited on U.S. soil. The USSR's pavilion was a massive show stealer that was by far the biggest exhibit at Expo, occupying an acre and a half of Havermale Island. Visitors were greeted by a colossal sculpted map of Russia outside the pavilion, which weighed over two tons, and were treated to "I visited the Soviet pavilion!" tchotchkes ranging from t-shirts and bags to posters and pins.
