1957 Socks
Description: It was at the end of 1957 when Seattle finally got its own dedicated jazz club when Pete's Poop Deck opened their doors. Having taken up residence in a former tavern in Pioneer Square on what was then known as Skid Road – named for the greased logs that were laid to shoot timber off First Hill to Seattle’s waterfront mills – Pete's Poop Deck was the place to be for enthusiasts of modern jazz. This low-fi establishment with its dim lighting and apple crate seating quickly grew in popularity and was THE place to take in some jazz music. From local musicians to national touring acts, Pete's Poop Deck was open nightly and promised "carefully calculated confusion," something they delivered on throughout the '60s.

Description: A decade after the first cars packing automatic transmissions hit the streets, there was an increasing need for mechanics who could repair them and one such shop was Jerry's Auto Service, who opened up shop in 1957. As the story goes, Jerry wasn't just happy with repairing them - he wanted to make them better. From his small shop in the Saugus area of Santa Clarita, California, Jerry developed what many would consider the first aftermarket shift kits to improve the performance of an automatic. Whether you wanted to shave a fraction of a second on the drag strip or just be able to tow with more confidence, Jerry's Auto Service could make it happen.
Description: Constructed in 1957, Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track was a premier destination for dog racing and the spectators who came to watch and place bets on the races. Florida was the first state in the nation to make greyhound racing legal starting in 1931 and with 11 tracks holding live dog races, the Sunshine State was the unofficial U.S. capital of greyhound racing for years, with only seven tracks holding races in five other states — West Virginia, Arkansas, Iowa, Texas, and Alabama. In 2018, Florida passed a bill banning greyhound racing at pari-mutuel betting facilities, forcing the tracks to either close up shop or reinvent themselves as casinos or off-track betting operations.

Description: Stock car racer Robert Newton wanted to design a tire compound to gain an advantage against fellow racers. This was done by retreading street tires in order to obtain a compound that would adequately gain enough traction. Using an abandoned barn in his home state of Indiana to start his business, he began sales to local racers, making him the first producer of specialty tires for competition use.
