Description: Bay City had three prominent breweries in the late 1800s: Bay City Brewery, Kolb Bros. Brewery and West Bay City Brewing Co. "This area was inhabited by immigrants that came to work the fur trading and lumbering industries," said Carole Powers, Bay County Historical Museum research librarian. Until 1917, that is. Prohibition began, and the Phoenix Brewing Co. closed for a short time. All three of the breweries switched to nonalcoholic beverages, such as pop, malt syrup and malt extract. Malt extract was used to make beer at home. After prohibition, the breweries returned to beer making. All three companies mainly made lager, but Bay City Brewing Co., which called its beer "The Finest," also had imperial ale.
Description: Goebel Brewing Company was a brewing company in Detroit, Michigan from 1873 to 1964 eventually acquired late in its existence by Stroh Brewery Company. The beer was locally popular in Detroit from the company's inception, but grew in popularity and was eventually available in many states for a brief period in the 1940s, with an ad campaign in Life magazine that featured restaurant ads from many famous eateries around the country using Goebel beer as an ingredient. The beer, billed as a "light lager", was golden in color, and was noticeably drier than most everyday beers of the era. Their longtime mascot was a bantam, called Brewster Rooster, who wore attire with Goebel's logo, and the beer was a long-time sponsor of Detroit Tigers baseball.

In 1857, Templeton's—a furniture store on Albany's main drag, Broadway, advertised refrigerators for sale. Suitable for, as the ad expresses, "Grocers, Butchers, and Lager Beer purposes."
