Description: Cupertino, California is known for a lot of things, but what most people don’t know is that there is a 3,510-acre limestone quarry hidden in plain sight along Permanente Creek just west of town in an unincorporated area of Santa Clara County. The massive quarry has been in operation since 1939 when it was started to supply concrete for the construction of the Shasta Dam, and today is responsible for the production of more than half of the cement used in the Bay Area.
Description: A cartoon depicts a young boy wearing a yellow hard hat and an orange safety vest, holding a sheet of paper. Description: Portland cement was developed in Britain beginning in the middle of the 18th century. Its name is derived from its similarity to Portland stone, a type of building stone quarried on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. Modern Portland cement development began in 1756 when combinations of different limestones and additives, including trass and pozzolanas were added during the construction of a lighthouse. Portland cement had been imported into America for decades, but in 1871, Eagle Brand Portland Cement began producing it stateside in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and by the early 20th century, American-made Portland cement had displaced most of the imported product.
