Cheeseburger Socks
Description: Located at the corner of Van Ness and Pacific in San Francisco, Hippo Hamburgers (a.k.a. Hippo Burger, Hippo’s, or The Hippo) was America's original gourmet burger joint. Founded by Jack Falvey in 1950 at a time when hamburgers across the country were fairly boring, Falvey created an eccentric menu with more than 50 burgers inspired by international cuisines from his world travels. Options like the Cantoneseburger and the Bourbon Burger were staples, but one of the wackiest, best-known creations was the Hamburger Sundae. This burger came piled vanilla ice cream and hot fudge on a burger patty, plus a sliced pickle, a maraschino cherry and nuts. I can't imagine that it was especially good, but it was a popular dare among high school kids.
