Description: Dumont Shipping began in 1963 as Telninger's Transport, a regional trucking company serving the greater Center City area. Over the next quarter century, the company steadily expanded its operations, evolving from a local carrier into a major force in global intermodal container shipping. In 1990, Telninger's entered into an exclusive shipping partnership with ENCOM, a relationship that ultimately led to the technology giant acquiring the company outright. Following the purchase, Telninger's Transport was rebranded as Dumont Shipping and extensively modernized under ENCOM's leadership, growing into one of the world's most efficient, technologically advanced, and environmentally responsible freight carriers.
Description: J. Harwood Cochrane founded the Overnite Transportation Company in Richmond, Virginia back in 1935 with an initial fleet consisted of one tractor, one trailer, and one straight truck. Overnite saw steady growth in its early years, fueled by contracts with the region's big tobacco producers. The company went public in 1957 and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1962. Through the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s Overnite grew through acquisition of smaller carriers or the assets of bankrupt competitors. In 1982, Overnite received authorization to operate in all 48 states of the contiguous US, allowing it to grow outside its home market in Virginia. By the mid-1980s, Overnite operated in 33 states plus Washington, D.C.

Description: The Santa Fe Trail Transportation Co. (SFTT) is an often overlooked but important chapter in the history of the Santa Fe Railway. By the 1920s, trucking companies had begun siphoning off less-than-carload (LCL) freight that had once been dominated by rail. While limited road infrastructure initially slowed that shift, the rapid expansion of highways in the 1930s made trucking a serious competitor to railroads like the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (AT&SF). To stay competitive, AT&SF launched SFTT as a wholly owned trucking subsidiary, fully integrated with its rail network to provide seamless, end-to-end intermodal service. SFTT operated for decades before being sold in 1984 amid a downturn in the economy.
