General Store Socks
Description: There wasn't a whole lot in Stamford, South Dakota back in the early 1900s, and to be honest, there isn't a whole lot there today, but that didn't stop German immigrant R.A. Bierstadt from opening a general store along what was then a stretch of the U.S. 16 highway. Offering the typical general store fare along with feed and seed goods, Bierstadt proved everyone wrong as farmers and ranchers found a trip to Stamford was a whole lot more convenient and a better use of their time than traveling into Rapid City or Sioux Falls.

Description: The name "Hudson" came from Joseph L. Hudson, a Detroit department store entrepreneur and founder of Hudson's department store, who provided the necessary capital and gave permission for the company to be named after him. A total of eight Detroit businessmen formed the company on February 20, 1909, to produce an automobile which would sell for less than US$1,000 (equivalent to approximately $26,656 in today's funds). One of the chief "car men" and organizer of the company was Roy D. Chapin, Sr., a young executive who had worked with Ransom E. Olds. (Chapin's son, Roy Jr., would later be president of Hudson-Nash descendant American Motors Corp. in the 1960s).

Description: FedMart was a chain of discount department stores started by Sol Price, who later founded Price Club. It was originally a discount department store open to government employees, who paid a membership fee of just $2 per family. FedMart's first location in San Diego, California was in a converted airport hangar and the store's first year was highly successful, exceeding all expectations. Over the next 20 years, FedMart grew to include 45 stores in a chain that generated more than $300 million in annual sales and expanded to several states in the Southwest United States with many locations being previous White Front or Two Guys stores. Price later sold two-thirds of the chain to Hugo Mann, a German retail chain, and in 1975 and was forced out.

Description: Agloe is a fictional hamlet in Colchester, Delaware County, New York, that became an actual landmark after mapmakers made up the community as a phantom settlement, an example of a "copyright trap" similar to a trap street. Agloe was put onto the map in order to catch plagiarism, as it appears only on the original cartographers' map and has a population of one. Soon, using fictional "copyright traps" became a typical strategy in mapmaker design to thwart plagiarism. Agloe was known as a "paper town" because of this. Agloe is also known for appearing in the American romantic mystery novel Paper Towns by John Green and its film adaptation.
