Description: Stuyvesant High School (SHS) opened in September 1904 at 345 E. 15th Street as Manhattan's first manual trade school for boys. At the time of its opening, the school consisted of 155 students and 12 teachers. By 1919, officials started restricting admission based on scholastic achievement, and in the late '60s, began admitting girls, making SHS a co-educational school. Having outgrown their original building, in the '80s, a new building overlooking Battery Park began construction in 1989. When it opened in 1992, students bid farewell to their old digs, and moved on - this design is commemorative of the big move to the new building.
