Description: Transcon Lines, founded in 1946 by investment banker Scribner Birlenbach, began as a modest Los Angeles trucking firm with 15 tractors and 22 trailers. Through aggressive expansion and acquisitions—including the pivotal Kramer-Consolidated Freight Lines in 1978—Transcon grew into a dominant coast-to-coast carrier by the early 1980s. At its peak in 1981, the company operated 117 terminals across 38 states, employed over 3,800 workers, and managed a fleet of 5,700 vehicles. However, despite its impressive growth and nationwide reach, the 1980s ushered in financial challenges that marked the beginning of Transcon’s decline.
