Description: Jörmungand (pronounced YOUR-man-gand), or Jörmungandr in Old Norse is the "Midgard (Earth) Serpent". He is a tremendous snake whose body is so long that it stretches around the Earth completely! Jörmungandr lurks beneath the waters of Midgard where Norse hero Thor is in constant pursuit of this slippery beast. The poetic Eddas of Norse mythology describe a variety of encounters between Thor and Jörmungandr with Jörmungandr always narrowly escaping Thor's wrath. Description: This block print shirt design is based on a probable Viking raven flag. The raven is a symbol closely associated with Odin-- having two ravens named Huginn and Muninn-- and was further associated with war since Odin is the god of war. It's said that the sons of Ragnar Lothbrok in the Great Heathen Army flew a raven banner as well as other viking figures throughout history. I've recreated the image as a block print in my own style following some historical examples then printed and scanned it to make this shirt!
Description: This hand-carved block print design is based off the Tanum rock art in Sweden. The petroglyphs are thought to be from the Bronze Age and depict a variety of items, animals, and people. Here I have recreated one of the images of a ship with what looks to be a sort of dragon head on either side. I have printed it by hand before scanning it to make this design.
Description: Ratatoskr is a squirrel from Norse mythology known for its role as a messenger on Yggdrasil, the World Tree. He scurries up and down the tree, carrying messages and insults between the eagle that perches atop Yggdrasil and the dragon Níðhöggr, who gnaws at its roots. Ratatoskr's actions stir up animosity between these two creatures, contributing to the tension and chaos within the Norse cosmos. His name roughly translates to "drill-tooth" or "gnaw-tooth." Despite being a minor figure, Ratatoskr's role highlights the theme of communication—and miscommunication—in the mythological world.
Description: Asgard was one of the Nine Realms and the former home world of the Asgardians. Asgard was destroyed in 2017, when Thor ordered Loki to unleash Ragnarök in order to kill Hela, killing 9,719 Asgardians in the process. The surviving Asgardians relocated to Earth, transforming the town of Tønsberg, Norway into the nation of New Asgard.
