Description: Martin Thompson arrived in Oregon in the late 1880s and worked at flour mills in Champoeg and Turner before taking over management of Boston Mills in Shedd. After purchasing the operation, he modernized it with steel roller mills and introduced Valley Rose flour, named for the roses of the Willamette Valley. Following his death in 1910, his sons renamed the company Thompson Bros. & Co. and expanded production with new silos and additional flour products. In 1930, the business became Thompson’s Flouring Mills and remained in the family until 1974. Today, the mill survives as Thompson’s Mills State Heritage Site, a preserved piece of Oregon’s industrial history.
