Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite launched by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957. Description: Channel 42 Austin, Texas began broadcasting as KBVO-TV on December 4, 1983, marking the city's first new commercial TV station since 1971 and its first independent local channel. Owned by Austin Television—a consortium of three groups—KBVO-TV initially focused on movies before affiliating with a rising network in 1986, shifting to first-run programming. In 1995, the station was sold and rebranded, retiring the KBVO-TV name and ushering in a new era for Channel 42.
