Silva Socks
Description: In 1989, former metalworker and union leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made his first run for Brazil's presidency as the Workers' Party (PT) candidate in the nation's first direct election since 1960. Campaigning for workers' rights, land reform, economic change, and reduced inequality, he used the slogan “um voto de classe,” a play on both social class and making a classy choice. His grassroots support carried him past 20 other candidates into a runoff against Fernando Collor de Mello. Lula lost the December 17 election with nearly 47% of the vote to Collor's 53%, but emerged as a major political figure. After further defeats in 1994 and 1998, he finally won the presidency in 2002.
Description: A powerful and symbolic design featuring Lula´s hand with a wedding ring gently touching the stars of the Brazilian flag. A patriotic statement celebrating national identity, hope, and progress in South America. Perfect for t-shirts, stickers, mugs, and wall art for supporters of Brazilian culture and politics.
