Description: From 14 May 1943 to 21 April 1945, the squadron conducted strategic bombardment of shipyards, submarine bases, marshaling yards, oil facilities, airfields, and aircraft plants. On occasion, it flew tactical sorties against gun emplacements, rocket sites, enemy troops, and communications centers. On 17 August 1943, it earned its first Distinguished Unit Citation, striking targets at Regensburg and Schweinfurt, Germany. Soon after, on 14 October 1943, the squadron participated in World War II's single most important raid on ball-bearing factories at Schweinfurt. It operates MC-130J Commando II aircraft providing special operations capability. Description: The Ghost Army was a US Army tactical deception unit during World War II officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. The unit was given a unique mission: to deceive Hitler's forces and mislead them as to the size and location of Allied forces, while giving the actual units elsewhere time to maneuver. Some of the tactics the Ghost Army created were deceptive inflatable tanks, fake airfields, and complex sound effects. Their story was kept secret until it was declassified in 1996.
