The fictional town serves as the setting for many related stories and novels, gaining an international audience with Lake Wobegon Days in 1985. Described as a small rural town in central Minnesota, the events and adventures of the townspeople provided a wealth of humorous and often touching stories. Sumus Quod Sumus is Lake Wobegon's motto and is incorporated in the town seal. The Latin translation reads "We Are What We Are" which fits perfectly with the Midwestern attitudes portrayed in the tales from this fictional locale.
