Description: John Locke was an English philosopher, widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism". He argued that individuals possess natural rights to life, liberty, and property that exist prior to the formation of any government. Locke's ideas profoundly influenced the American Revolution and the development of liberal thought. He argued that all people naturally inherit these rights, and governments exist only to protect them. This idea deeply shaped modern democracy and Western political thought.
Description: This design is inspired by a 17th century portrait of Hortense Mancini. Hortense was a French noblewoman who kept flowering and blossoming no matter what her circumstances were. Her name, "Hortense" is a version of the word "Hortensia" which is a kind of flower. Design by Deborah Wong.
