Florida was the first state in the nation to make greyhound racing legal starting in 1931 and with 11 tracks holding live dog races, the Sunshine State was the unofficial U.S. capital of greyhound racing for years, with only seven tracks holding races in five other states — West Virginia, Arkansas, Iowa, Texas, and Alabama.
