Description: "Tricolored Heron with Fresh Catch" I photographed this Tricolored Heron from the boardwalk on South Padre Island as it paused among the mangrove roots with a freshly caught fish. Watching these graceful birds hunt is always fascinating, and this brief moment of its success made for one of my favorite photographs of the morning. Description: "Tricolored Heron Preening by Water" I always enjoy walking the boardwalks on South Padre Island, especially during the quiet morning and evening hours. This Tricolored Heron was beautifully lit by the morning sun as it paused to preen along the waters edge, and even better, it was remarkably close to the boardwalk where I was walking. Photographed at the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary, home to approximately one mile of boardwalks stretching across brackish wetlands where fresh and salty waters meet.
