"Hey, Sue, where can I find you later?" "At Gay Blades, of course!" Located at 52 St. & Broadway in New York City, Gay Blades began life as an ice skating rink by the name of Iceland in 1922. Iceland folded in 1932 and sat empty until it was converted to a roller rink and reopened as Gay Blades in 1941. Yes, the name gets plenty of snickers nowadays, but hey, it was the '40s and everyone was looking to get gay, so it made total sense then :)
