On March 27, 2022, during the live television broadcast of the 94th Academy Awards, actor Will Smith walked onstage and slapped comedian Chris Rock across the face as he presented the Award for Best Documentary Feature. Just before, Rock had acknowledged Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, with a joke referencing her shaved head. Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia (a medical condition causing hair loss), was seated next to her husband and, unlike him, did not appear amused. Will Smith then strode onto the stage and slapped Rock. Smith then returned to his seat and shouted expletives at Rock. Rock briefly commented on the incident and then continued with the ceremony.
