Longyerbyen lies 650 miles from the North Pole in Svalbard. It was established as a mining community in 1906 by John Longyear and totally destroyed in WWII by the German Navy. It now has a population of just over 1,000 and relies mainly on scientific research and tourism although some mining and fishing are carried out. Only a small part of the population are long term residents with the average stay in the town being just over 6 years. Picture taken on 8th June 2023 in Longyearbyen town.
