With her experience and efforts in preserving this tradition culture,Apo Whang-od was nominated for a National Living Treasures Award,an award given to people or artist with significant contributions to intangible cultural heritage in the Philippines.

She is often described as the "last" and oldest mambabatok and is part of the Butbut people of the larger Kalinga ethnic group.
