Silverman's store was an instant hit as he stocked it with all the latest recordings as well as those from up-and-coming musicians, including many black artists, something that was still not very common at the time. Silverman began holding jam sessions and live radio broadcasts in the storefront's window, a spot that attracted teens and young adults to the store and became known as the Maxie's goldfish bowl. Silverman would eventually change the store's name to Waxie Maxie's and open over 30 locations throughout the Washington Metropolitan area.

Description: Remembering Hecht’s Department Store. Washington DC and Baltimore Maryland. Hecht's was a large chain of department stores that operated mainly in the mid-Atlantic area. The firm originated in Baltimore in 1860. And then in 1896 Hecht’s opened a store in Washington DC, which eventually moved to a grand glass and marble store at the corner of 7th and F Streets Northwest in 1925. By 2005, Hecht's had some 81 stores in Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The family-owned business made customers a top priority and believed in a personalized shopping experience.

Description: WGAY signed on December 7, 1946, airing a beautiful music (easy listening) format at 1050 AM from their deco-style studio in Silver Spring, Maryland. The WGAY calls are said to refer to the station's 'bright and gay' happy sound. Despite its sobriquet of elevator music, WGAY was a popular station throughout the DC Metro Area and eventually doubled its power to 20 kW for better reach. On February 1, 1960, the WGAY calls were moved to the FM band at 99.5 with a 50 kW stereo signal, and the station's easy-listening broadcasts became even more ubiquitous in homes, stores, and offices throughout the region.
