This image is of just one of the hundreds of bas relief carvings that cover the walls of the lower gallery at Angkor Wat. All-in-all, the carvings run for about 600 yards around the four sides of the temple. These carvings celebrate religious and historical epics. The undertaking to complete just these cravings, which represent just a small proportion of the overall temple, must have taken years. The carvings, which are sheltered from the elements are in remarkably good shape considering they were carved about 900 years ago. To understand the scale of the temple complex, it covers an area of about 200 hectares (490 acres). This image depicts one of the wonderful bas relief carvings on the walls of the Bayon Temple in Angkor Thom. Although time has taken its toll, the statue is essentially intact, as are the wonderful stone-carved ornamentations that surround it. I remember having to wait several minutes to capture this image because of the constant procession of visitors passing by.

So what is this? The image depicts just a small sampling of the incredible array of bas relief carvings that line the galleries in Angkor Wat. Apart from minor variations, each character in the carvings is the same. Although carved about 800–900 years ago, these carvings have been protected from the elements as they line the inner walls of the galleries that surround the tiers of the temple. Angkor Wat is an architectural triumph.

Whilst in Malta, during my time training to be a Submarine pilot, I had chance to visit the fortified old capital of Mdina. Taking time out to stroll around the town, I took quite a few snaps of the architecture... This is one of them... I thought it apt to share at this time of year... and who knows, it might make a good Christmas card..? "The bas relief of the Virgin Mary with little baby Jesus".
